Stephen Ellis is the Desmond Tutu professor in the faculty of social sciences at the Free University (VU) Amsterdam. A historian by profession, he has worked as editor of the newsletter Africa Confidential, as co-editor of the journal African Affairs, and as head of the Africa programme at the International Crisis Group.
