Debating Ideas reflects the values and editorial ethos of the African Arguments book series, publishing engaged, often radical, scholarship, original and activist writing from within the African continent and beyond. It offers debates and engagements, contexts and controversies, and reviews and responses flowing from the African Arguments books. It is edited and managed by the International African Institute, hosted at SOAS University of London, the owners of the book series of the same name.
Host of the podcast ‘The Fire These Times’, Ayman Makarem is joined by two Sudanese commentators, Raga Makawi (site editor) and Dallia Abdelmoniem, a burgeoning Sudanese journalist, to talk about the war in Sudan. Both guests talk at length about the situation as well as the political, economic, and revolutionary context it exists within. This intimate discussion explores the many ways Sudanese people are reflecting on and struggling against the current war situation. With little to no international attention, these voices are vital to listen to and learn from.

The Fire These Times is a podcast project working on uplifting internationalist dialogues on human rights, climate justice, and visions of liberatory futures. Our unique editorial team enables our episodes to weave together diverse and inter-related Global-South perspectives: from queer liberation to Palestinian resistance, from Jewish radicalism to Syrian internationalism, from Armenian emancipation to revolutionary ecology. Our podcast interrogates the many fires burning all around us and questions not only how to put them out but also how to heal and grow with what remains.
