The 2011 Inamori Ethics Prize will be honoring BEATRICE MTETWA, an eminent international human rights lawyer, social justice advocate and defender of freedoms of the press and minorities in her home country of Zimbabwe. Her achievements have already led to many honors. Along with Nelson Mandela, Beatrice Mtetwa is the only African to receive France’s prestigious Trarieux International Human Rights Prize. She received the International Human Rights Award from the American Bar Association (2010), and the Burton Benjamin International Press Freedom Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Committee to Protect Journalists (2008).   We will be honoring her at a prize ceremony from 5:30-6:30 pm in Severance Hall on September 7th, at which time she will deliver the prize recipient’s lecture.  The ceremony will include musical performances and a video detailing Ms. Mtetwa’s accomplishments.

Earlier in the day on the 7th, from 12:30pm to 2:00pm, there will  be a roundtable symposium, which, in addition to Ms. Mtetwa, will feature Ambassador Tom McDonald, US ambassador to Zimbabwe under President Clinton, now a Partner at the international law firm of Baker Hostetler in Washington, DC; Peter Godwin, international human rights lawyer, foreign & war correspondent and best-selling author of The Fear: Robert Mugabe and the Martydom of Zimbabwe, Andrew Meldrum, journalist formerly of the Guardian Newspaper, London and author of the book Where We Have Hope: A Memoir of Zimbabwe, and Prof. Rhonda Williams of the Case Western Reserve University History Department, leader of the campus-wide Social Justice Alliance. (Seating is limited for this portion of the event.) These experts will also join us for the evening ceremony.

Parking: The Campus Center Garage is located adjacent to Severance Hall, with stair and elevator access to Severance Hall. Event parking in the Campus Center Garage can be purchased per vehicle when space permits. Additional event parking is available in the Case Western Reserve University Lot 1 off Euclid Avenue across from Severance Hall; at the University Circle Lot 13A on Adelbert Road; and at the Cleveland Botanical Garden parking garage on East Boulevard. Seating: There is no need to check in for the event. If you pre-printed your ticket, you need to only show up at Severance Hall and proceed to your seat (best to be seated by 5:15pm, if possible).  Tickets are free and we highly recommend that you consider self-printing your ticket(s) at online by visiting the Severance Hall Online Kiosk. Because students are returning from summer break within the next few days, we highly encourage faculty & staff planning to attend this event to reserve their tickets presently as these slots are on a first –reserve basis.
