Photo of the Week: The Burundi Coup

On 13 May 2015, General Godefroid Niyombare declared on Burundian radio that President Pierre Nkurunziza had been overthrown. In the preceding weeks, protesters had taken to the streets against the president’s decision to run for a third term. In response to the news of the coup, hundreds took to the streets to celebrate. Igor Rugwiza was there to capture the moment.
The moment was, however, short-lived. Days later, the coup was declared a failure and Nkrununziza returned to his position.
