Photo of the Week: Eat, sleep, breathe football
Earlier this week, the English football club Everton made a slight splash when they touched down in Tanzania’s capital Dar es Salaam. The team, based in the western coastal hamlet of Liverpool, a cotton and coal trading port that enjoyed brief fame in the 1960s when local boyband “The Beatles” inspired so-called “Beatlesmania”, are in East Africa for some pre-season training and friendlies. Everton’s notorious rivalry with neighbouring team Liverpool FC has remained tense for decades and has occasionally spilled over into low-level violence*.
To mark the occasion of Everton’s visit, we bring you a photo showcasing some of the love for the beautiful game from the other end of the continent. In this picture, taken by jbdodane, supporters stand on motorcycles to catch a glimpse of a local match happening in western Côte d’Ivoire.
In our Photo of the Week, we showcase one of the boldest and most beautiful images, old or new, that we’ve come across that week. If you’d like to submit a photograph to be featured, please email [email protected].
