Think African Podcast ep 9: Joy as resistance
African Arguments is delighted to partner with the Think African podcast series, created by Sound Africa in cooperation with Heinrich Böll Stiftung Cape Town. Think African examines the big questions that define the world from an unapologetically African point of view. Episodes are released twice a month and are hosted by Jedi Ramalapa, Editor in Chief of Sound Africa.
In episode nine, we discuss joy. It’s a curious feature of autocratic regimes that forms of joy are usually banned. We explore how democratic governments in Africa are acting in that tradition. We speak to Wanuri Kahiu, a Kenyan film director and founder of AfroBubblegum, whose film about same-sex love Rafiki (2018) was banned in Kenya.
