Dr Gillian Mathys is a Great Lakes historian at Ghent University. This essay is based on her book conditionally titled, 'Making Histories of the Lake Kivu Region: Conflict, Connections and Mobility in Central Africa', forthcoming with Cambridge University Press. It is based on extensive oral history in the Lake Kivu region (both Congo and Rwanda) since 2009, as well as archival research.
